Legal Alert | Update of the Guaranteed Minimum Monthly Wage for 2025

Since January 1, 2025, the minimum monthly wage in Portugal has risen to €870.00 (eight hundred and seventy euros), making an increase of €50.00 (fifty euros) compared to the minimum monthly wage in effect during 2024, which was €820.00 (eight hundred and twenty euros).

This increase, approved by Decree-Law no. 112/2024, of December 19, is intended to retain talent and qualified human capital in Portugal, strengthening the economy’s productivity and competitiveness.

This law applies to the whole of continental Portugal. In the Autonomous Regions of Madeira and Azores, which are subject to their own regulations, the minimum wage will be €915.00 (nine hundred and fifteen euros) and €913.50 (nine hundred and thirteen euros and fifty cents), respectively.

The legally guaranteed minimum monthly wage takes precedence over any lower amounts agreed in an employment contract or set out in collective regulation instruments, so as of January 1, 2025, all workers earning less than the minimum monthly wage for 2025 are entitled to have their wages upgraded to at least these minimum amounts.

Part-time workers also have the right to have the value of their pay updated proportionally, based on the new value of the guaranteed minimum monthly wage.

The Portuguese government, by signing the Tripartite Agreement for Wage Appreciation and Economic Growth 2025-2028, is committed to progressive annual increases of €50.00 (fifty euros), with the aim of reaching €1,020.00 (one thousand and twenty euros) in 2028.
